World-leading renewable energy engineers have set up Gaia-Wind, offering consumers and businesses the ability to create an independent source of energy. The electricity from a Gaia-Wind turbine not only delivers clean electricity for everyday use, but also compensates for the carbon footprint created by heating, cars, air travel and other carbon emissions through the use of fuel-based energy. The high output of a Gaia-Wind turbine, typically 30,000 kWh per year, ensures a payback time around 7 years at current electricity prices, where in very good wind conditions this would even be faster.
The Gaia-Wind turbine has been designed to complement moderate wind conditions and incorporates a large rotor which is responsive even in light winds. This operational profile makes the turbine especially suitable for the moderate wind speeds which are the prevailing wind conditions in the mainland of the United Kingdom. Although over 100 Gaia-Wind 11 kW’s have been installed in Denmark for, on average, almost 10 years, it was only after the company had been taken over by private investors from the United kingdom at the end of last year, that the company started its international expansion. The UK marketing and sales is managed from Gaia-Wind’s Glasgow offices, from where also further development programs are managed. Kenneth Peterson, Marketing and Sales Manager for the UK: ‘We are only beginning our activities in the UK but already there is a lot of interest from farmers and people with large country houses. It is great that we now have a turbine up and running in Scotland so people can actually see the product and experience how quiet it runs instead of trying to understand noise reports.’ Regarding the prospects of Gaia-Wind he added; ‘There is now a fair number of customers who have filed planning applications for a Gaia-Wind turbine and we expect to install at least a further 5 turbines in the UK before the yearend.’ Apart from demonstration purposes, the turbine will mainly be used for development purposes. Scott Love, Project Engineer at Gaia-Wind added, ‘It is really exciting that we now have a turbine close to our R&D offices. We have lots of designs and plans for future products and developments and the turbine on Myres Hill offers a great opportunity to test and develop these ideas. Also while optimizing our supply chain, we every now and again start using new components, having a test turbine on a very windy site offers the opportunity to evaluate whether these new parts are up to our quality standards before we start using them in manufacturing.’
