Installation & Planning Support

Since 2006 planning laws have permitted the installation of small scale wind turbines without planning approval so long as they do not affect immediate neighbours or those in the surrounding area.

However, if you are considering installing a wind turbine, it is best to discuss issues such as safety, noise impact and electrical interference with your local authority as soon as possible before you decide to go ahead. This is especially important if your property is a listed building or on a conservation site.

We also recommended that you check the wind speed in your area before deciding to install a wind turbine.  The approximate wind speed in your location can be calculated by clicking here.  The positioning of your wind turbine is very important because it will determine the actual performance of the turbine, so consider the following points carefully.

  • Firstly, there should not be any obstacles in the direction of the wind source which in the UK is usually from the South West.
  • Secondly, turbulent wind zones can be created in built up or forested areas which can significantly lower the performance of a turbine so you must ensure it sits above or away from any such obstructions.
